Gardening on the deck avoids hungry mouths
I am Surinder Chadha , I live in Old Tappan in northerly New Jersey . horticulture has been my hobby since childhood . In Old Tappan , we are overrun by deer , chipmunks , and squirrels , who do not make produce flower easy . Most of the annuals I plant are in more than 150 12- to 24 - column inch planters on the pack of cards , which is about 7 to 8 feet gamy . It may be gruelling to trust , but cervid will come up on the deck of cards if we do n’t exit the gate .
We have run across Surinder ’s incredible compendium of enormous houseplant before(click here ) , and here we see those same works taking a small summertime vacation outside , which is a dandy way to give them optimal conditions to prosper and get big .
Rows and rows of container of yearly convey scores of coloring material and avoid the deer . New Guinea impatiens ( Impatienshawkeri , annual ) overlook on the top of the railing .

Tons of red flowers frombegonias(Begoniahybrid , yearly ) and salvia ( Salviasplendens , annual ) echo the red tones of the crepe myrtle ( Lagerstroemia , Zones 7–10 ) blooming next to the deck .
Not ALL the annuals are in container . Here , mass ofvinca(Catharanthusroseus , yearly ) efflorescence . This yearly bed full sunlight , bloom well through extreme heat , and is cervid and rabbit tolerant . Its only helplessness is that it does n’t expand in wet , poorly drained soils .
In this section , petunias(Petuniahybrids , one-year ) in various colors and a chicken - leafage sweet-smelling potato vine ( Ipomoeabatatas , annual ) dominate .

Beautiful containers frame this door .
Beautiful coleus ( Plectranthusscutellarioides , looks like the sort ‘ Chocolate Mint ’ )
Check out how tremendous that same flame nettle flummox later in the season .

Wax begonias ( Begoniasemperflorens , annual ) are dependable , easy - to - grow plants that blossom nonstop in full sun to wanton wraith .
The genusBegoniais enormous , with many wonderful variety . The look to be one of the Dragon Wing varieties .
