Michael Pollan , writer of The Omnivore ’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food , will get a Lennon Ono Grant for Peace .
In honor of their work , Michael Pollan , bestselling author ofThe Omnivore ’s Dilemma(The Penguin Press , 2006 ) andIn Defense of Food(The Penguin Press , 2008 ) , and Barbara Kowalcyk , conscientious objector - founding father of the Center for Foodborne Illness Research and Prevention , are among those being award the 2010 Lennon Ono Grant for Peace .
Yoko Ono established the biannual award in 2002 to honor John Lennon ’s commitment to peace and human right . Ono will present the awards along with $ 50,000 grants in Reykjavik , Iceland , on Oct. 9 , 2010 — the day of the month that would have marked Lennon ’s 70th natal day .
Pollan is well known as a passionate food activist who has explore matter such as genetic engine room and mill farming in his books and essays . His most recent book , Food Rules(The Penguin Press , 2009 ) , offers a theoretical account for a sound diet and promote the mantra , “ Eat food . Not too much . Mostly plants . ”
Kowalcyk appeared alongside Pollan in the documentaryFood , Inc.(2008 ) . She became an exponent for food safety after her son , Kevin , died from anE. coliO157 : H7 contagion in 2001 . She co - founded CFI , a nonprofit organization that works to identify solutions to assist protect public health and meet the food challenge of the twenty-first century . Kowalcyk also travels across the res publica to speak out about food - refuge issues .

Barbara Kowalcyk , a 2010 recipient of the Lennon Ono Grant for Peace , co - plant a not-for-profit to take on food - safety military issue .
In a press dismissal issued by CFI , Kowalcyk say , “ I am deeply honor that my employment in food safety gadget is being recognized by Yoko Ono . Walker is receiving the award after traveling to Gaza with members of the anti - war mathematical group Code Pink in 2009 to oppose violence in the region .
