Growing corn has been one of my most hearty horticulture projects over the last two geezerhood . A single 4 - ft by 10 - foot maize bed in 2021proved so productivethat I tripled my edible corn planting to a trio of beds in 2022 . I staggered the planting of each bed to spread out the harvest .
Overall , I ’m happy with the results . I ’ve enjoy many dinners of fresh edible corn this summer , with more to come as the last bed achieve harvest time . But along the way , I ’ve witnessed firsthand the importance of watering and weeding . You might say I ’ve see some lesson that I ’ll carry forward for 2023 .
Everyone knows watering on a regular basis and weed diligently are authoritative step for produce a good for you and productive garden . But you might not notice all the impacts unless you develop multiple beds with more or less dissimilar approaches and compare resultant role .

Learning on the Job
get me give you some instance . In 2021 , I was driven to succeed at my first try growing corn . To that end , I watered the bed every Clarence Shepard Day Jr. , even though it was n’t tightlipped to a commodious weewee seed and I had to haul body of water in a 35 - gallon leg tank .
In 2022 , due to a super - packed agenda of oeuvre and farm project , I shifted to water the edible corn beds every two or three day . The plant life still get happily , but they did n’t get as tall . Each bed produced about 25 percent less corn than the single bed in 2021 .

Lessons in Weeds
Now , let ’s talk about weeding . In 2022 , I weeded the bed thoroughly before planting and again during the summer , once the corn had grown magniloquent enough to shade off any other weeds that endeavor to pop up .
But to be more specific … I only weeded two of the beds . The third bed , I ’m afraid , had to resist for itself .
To its reference , the plants in the underweight seam grew just as magniloquent as in the two weed beds and produce a similar ( perhaps slightly lower ) intensity of corn . But the underweight bed definitely had more pests living among the leaves and nibbling at the ends of the edible corn . ( I should mention that I do n’t spray my corn whiskey . )
Ultimately , I ’ve pull in two close from two years of growing corn :
I know , I know . Two years is n’t exactly a huge sample size for drawing definite conclusions . And my takeaways are more anecdotic than scientific . There was nothing scientifically keep in line about my inadvertent experiments . And for all I eff other out of the blue factors may have had a peachy impact than watering and weed .
But then again … watering regularly and weeding diligently are seldom big strategies , right ? Maybe I can grow a decent amount of maize by watering every few days and rarely weed . But for best results , I plan to take the lesson I ’ve learned over the past two years and apply them thoroughly in 2023 .
