Liguria , Italy , is a steep place . The responsibility is the thin slash of coastal mountains that fall into the Mediterranean waters — never more than 40 miles astray — that wraps around the northwest area recognize as the Italian Riviera . My wife and I inhabit in an flat on the third storey of an old stable next to a creek . The building was converted to homes a few centuries ago . Next to our building is a sunny drop-off that rises far above the four - story , 10 - foot roof construction . The cliff is so steep that rockslide are common in the rainy time of year . ( Rockslides are a vulgar occurrence in all of Liguria , in reality . )
When I moved there , the drop-off was covered with berry vine and bush trees , but the strong cheerfulness inspired me to hear to make a garden up there . After the initial clearing , I start making chick ’ nests of arm and Mary Jane in some of the angles where I could make a flat place and fill it with screened crap . I next piled up rocks to make a few planting areas . In the third year , annoyed with the modest size of the planting areas , I started making much orotund bench walls , and I developed the organization of using chicken feed bottles as the principal building blocks .
