Most ( maybe all ) master gardener and garden order garden tours have been cancel this summertime due to COVID-19 . Understandable , but still a bummer for those of us who ca n’t call back of a better summer activity than explore a garden . So , I decided to create my own garden enlistment in 2020 , visiting public garden within a shortsighted drive of my home each calendar week during the usual garden go season . I started it off over the weekend with a sojourn to the Normandale Japanese Garden at Normandale Community College in Bloomington .

I ’ve think about visiting this garden , contrive by designer Takao Watanabe , many times but only made the trip-up this past weekend . The garden is spare and open to the populace , easy to get around and clearly popular . Even early on on a Saturday morning , a few other group strolled the garden as I did .

The Normandale Japanese garden is pucker aside between the chief campus construction and a marshy lake . create the garden as part of the college was a labor begun by Bloomington Affiliated Garden Clubs more than 50 years ago , and the garden was opened in 1976 . Like most Japanese garden , the planting style is restrained . Some blossom shrubs punctuate the season , but most of the interest is achieved through foliation texture , observation on water , stones and variations of the color green .

A Gift and Islands

You enter the garden through a wooden gate , and to your left is a modest tax shelter with information about the garden , its design and its chronicle . To the right wing , the garden stretches out before you , with its pond , island and a lovelyBentendo . TheBentendois a hexagon - regulate construction that was given to the garden along with a bridge to it by a grouping of Nipponese - American veterans who worked in the Twin Cities as translator for the United States military during World War II . Their service and the kind treatment they received in the Twin Cities is commemorated with a plaque .

There are many options for walk around the garden . I took the full loop around to begin with , admiring the room the plant reverberate off the water in the bright morning sun . A falls and current added a pleasant audio , and the garden is clearly a favorite spot for bird . I spot a couple of flushed - offstage blackbirds , noisily asserting their territory , but the chirp speech sound made it clear there were other birds nearby . A duck’s egg maltreat onto a rock on the boundary of the pond for a quick bath .

The main pond of the garden has three islands : theBentendoisland , Crane Island and Turtle Island . Each is small , ringed with stones and implant with shrubs . A long bridge cut across the pond and its bright cerise railing along with other ruby accents on structures adds color to the garden .

A Place to Think

Normandale Nipponese garden also offer several spots to rest your heart , your dead body and your thinker . The garden features five traditional lantern sculptures , several of which are made of granite . While I revel the garden tremendously in midsummer , I can visualize the rocks , lanterns and the architecture of the trees would be striking in winter as well .

The protection and strategically placed bench offer places to baby-sit and study the view . The Zig - Zag Bridge as it is called encourages mindfulness . The garden ’s structure also provides many different ways to view the garden , including through a windowpane in the shelter near the gate .

The way around the garden are easy to walk — the garden is very accessible to wheelchairs or those who need more sentence to get around . It ’s not prominent either . I was able-bodied to take the air around double , stop for photos , and sit a minute in less than an hour . Parking is a short , pleasant pass from the garden entry .
