In a sunny , flower - strew studio apartment in East Manhattan , Dutch master floristRob Platteldemonstrates his unconventional method of flowered design to a handful of student . “ You must be aware of the gestalt of the flower , ” he articulate , gently cajole a stem of impassioned red Aranda orchid into a sweetness of pink hydrangeas , seed eucalyptus , and miniature tail-flower . “ Understand the style it wants to be seen , ” he adds as he weaves in long strands of bear gage , wired together to resemble lash , and elegant French tulips . “ I wish using a mixture of vegetative and decorative industrial plant . Do n’t be limited by flowers . I use all parts of the industrial plant : bark , stem turn , leaves . ”

One of Holland ’s most progressive floral designers , the 53 - year - old Plattel is a second of an unusual person . He does n’t own a flower shop class , he does n’t do weddings , and he does n’t like to plan his work in forward motion . Instead , he takes his aspiration directly from nature , making large - scale of measurement installations from forage flush , leg , seed , veggie , and even driftwood .

Plattel is trained in exact cue from nature ’s serendipity . A alum ( cum laude ) from the intensive lord florist programme at Tuinbouwvakschool in Vught in the southerly Netherlands , he did his master ’s dissertation on “ strewing”—organic designs created on the ground when leaves or petals fall from a tree — and how this concept translates into floral design .

During a recent five - hour academic session titled “ The Synthesis of Natural Art and Design ” atFlower School New York , the esteemed flowered design center , Plattel take educatee in creating their own “ indoor fancy gardens . ” bulge with a base of sand and moss , Plattel encouraged the bookman to pay attention to the structure and rude growing patterns of the amaryllis , paperwhites , unfermented peas , calla lily , and kiwi vine lattice on the table in front of them .
