A patio paradise
Jill O’Hara sent in these effigy of her creative enjoyment of what seems like a really small garden site . Here ’s what she had to say :
I ’ve been enjoying the picture of minor - space gardens ; however , I have n’t experience any quite as pocket-sized as mine . I used to go on a half - Accho holding in Victoria , British Columbia , but am now in a condominium in nearby Brentwood Bay , with a very diminished balcony . I choose my condominium in orotund part because of the well - treed aspect both up closely and in the distance . After two years of trial and mistake while I learned to accept the limitation of my space , I have settled on what works well for me : a Japanese - inspire garden of primarily dwarf and miniature conifers , with a few pots kept for seasonal and odoriferous flowers such asIris pallida‘Aureo variegata ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) , which I call the grape bubblegum iris diaphragm ; Casablanca lilies(Lilium‘Casablanca ’ , Zones 4–9 ) ; heliotrope(Heliotropium arborescens , Zones 10–11 or as an annual ) ; andDianthus‘Rainbow Loveliness ’ ( geographical zone 3–8 ) . Instead of my former falls down a born rock outcropping , I have a small lotus jet , which provides movement and soft sound . Hummingbirds , Prunella modularis , and finches all use it for a drink and a tub , which pleases me vastly . My new garden is , as the saying goes , “ pocket-sized but utterly formed . ”
The balcony garden in May , with the sun stream over a Buddha surrounded by plushy planting .

View of part of the balcony at the end of March , with potted white tulip complement the emerging vary foliage ofIris pallida‘Aureo variegata ’ .
The natural spring provides soothing sound of water for human visitant , and a drink or a bathing tub for visiting birds .
A key part to any great garden : somewhere to baby-sit and enjoy it all ! The blossom purple bloodstone insure that any time drop on this comfortable chairwoman will be wonderfully fragrant .

A scene on the balcony in May .
Iris pallida‘Aureo variegata ’ not only has beautiful leaf , but its royal flowers smack wonderfully of grapes .
