While many scientists are concentre on the decline of honey bee , comparatively few study bumble bees . The good news is that a new subject field provides an estimate on bumble bee population and distributions across Michigan in the past century . The regretful newsworthiness is that these results are dramatically downcast , and they mirror what ’s take place across the Americas , Europe and Asia , too .

Michigan State University lead the subject field , which compared current distributions of bumble bee species across the state to the information gleaned from museum specimens collected as far back as the eighties . The research , published in the current outlet of Ecology , shows that one-half of the bumble bee species studied have declined by more than 50 % .

“ Bumble bee are important pollinators of flora across natural habitat , where they help endorse the seeds and Charles Edward Berry that birds and other animals calculate on , ” said Thomas Wood , MSU bugology postdoctoral researcher and lead generator of the study . “ They also are effective pollinators of many yield and vegetables that are important for healthy human diets . ”

Take blueberries , for object lesson . Bumble bees are highly effective pollinators of this leading Michigan yield harvest . To pull up the pollen necessary for fecundation , the flush needs to be agitate smartly , and bumble bee are expert at vibrating the bloom to shake out the pollen .

“ In Michigan , there are 19 species of bumble bees and around445 mintage of other bees , ” said Wood , who led the study in the lab of Rufus Isaacs , MSU entomologist . “ Many of Michigan ’s key crops depend on them . In fact , about 50 percent of cherry red pollination is carry out by wild bees . ”

Wood ’s team scour the state of Michigan and compared the statistical distribution of 12 different bumble bee species across the state ’s 83 counties before and after the class 2000 . Some of the biggest decline admit :

Even though the study center on Michigan , its findings check deterrent example for other regions around the globe , and some of them are positive . A couple of success stories admit the vulgar eastern bumble bee and the brown belted bumble bee , which increased by 31 % and 10 % , severally .

Why did some metal money stay on static or increase their range while other mintage declined ?

researcher investigated the kind of plants each bumble bee species visited by removing pollen from the specimen . Bumble bee carry their pollen on their back leg , and this can be take away and identified under a microscope , even decades after the bee was awake . When looking at these pollen shipment , the researchers see some consistent patterns .

“ Species that declined collected pollen from few species of plants and seem to have a narrower kitchen stove of plants they visit for pollen , ” Wood say . “ In contrast , the stable species call a much encompassing variety of flora . This suggests that picky eaters are less capable to switch if a favorite plant is n’t available . ”

The next form of the research will essay to interpret why bumble bee species with narrow diets do not show dieting flexibility .

“ Most of the declining bumble bee species in Michigan fly in the summer , feeding on prairie plant and other bloom of unfastened countryside , ” Wood said . “ Fewer type of plant flower in summertime liken to the outpouring . We also know that prairies have been lost over the last C so summertime bumble bees may have been hit doubly due to a departure of their prefer home ground and a trim power to adapt to this alteration . ”

Kelsey Graham , MSU bug-hunter , and Jason Gibbs , University of Manitoba , also chip in to this field .

This enquiry was funded in part by the USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture , throughthe Great Lakes Great Bees project .
