A impertinent picked bowl of tomatoes from the garden
It is here . Tomato season has come at the farm and like every year – it becomes a insane rush to clean , feed , make and store everything we can with the magical red yield .
It always astound me how quickly we go from impatiently waiting for that first taste from those ripening dark-green globes to “ what the $ % & ! are we going to do with all of these tomatoes ? ! ” 🙂

Freshly canned salsa made on Saturday
Over the course of the next few weeks – we will blame anywhere from 25 to 50 British pound a day from the garden – and almost every Nox , we will be urine bathing or pressing canning a batch of home - made salsa , ketchup , alimentary paste sauce , tomato juice , pizza sauce and more . ( you may witness some of our favorite tomato based recipes below )
I have to admit – by the last of it all – we are normally quick for it to be over . But you just ca n’t shell heading into the pantry during the dusk , wintertime and early spring to pull out a jounce of tinned garden good .

The Celebrity Tomato – our darling !
This year ’s harvest was push back a workweek or two more than normal by the cooler and wetter weather we have experienced here in Ohio . But judging by the first few picking – the harvest should be flop up there with the last few years .
Although we always try a new kind or two every year – our favorite love apple continues to be the Celebrity – it really is the ultimate love apple in so many ways . It not only has that “ perfect ” tomato shape – but is a wakeless manufacturer on the vine – slice beautiful for sandwich – and works well for salsa , juice , or any of our sauce .

There is nothing like the taste of fresh tomato juice from the garden
It also blends well with our La Roma tomatoes – the other workhorse variety we establish each twelvemonth . The Roma ’s meaty substance make it a keen alternative when it comes to thickening up our alimentary paste and pizza sauce .
We tend to expend the first few harvests of our tomato for succus and salsa – because they are commonly more plump early in the season . We then make our alimentary paste sauce , pizza sauce and ketchup with the love apple harvested later – as they tend to be a little thicker from the late summer heat .
