Some vegetables enjoy a shady spot as much as gardeners do. Here’s an ideas for keeping cool-season crops undercover to help extend the season.

One of the horticulture project on the typical June to - do listing is to rip up nerveless - season plants before they start to absquatulate and toss them on the compost voltaic pile .

This is something I ’d unremarkably do , but this time of year the peas are still going strong .

In April I planted blow pea from Ferry - Morse ’s Taste of Asia vegetable line in a large container that ride near the vegetable garden . To protect the sprouts from birds , squirrels , and other critters that might nibble at them , I covered the container with a tumid while of row cover .

Once the industrial plant started to grow , I tot a marvellous , triangular trellis to the interior of the container and refastened the row cover to supply protection from coolheaded spring weather that suddenly turned unseasonably raging .

The snowfall peas start producing two-dimensional pod in May and they have n’t stopped since . I ’ve used them in stir fry recipes and have also quickly steamed them as both a hot side ravisher and a crunchy , cool down addition to salads .

The plant are still produce and I ’m certain it ’s because they ’re staying cool surreptitious . My attempt to extend the season for snow peas remind me of another Denver vegetable nurseryman ’s extra endeavour .

Last class I key out how Kathy Corbett make an ingenious tone to keep her scratch bed cool during red-hot weather in a blog station called “ Lettuce Grow All Summer Long . ”

Kathy built the lettuce tincture out of recycled materials and an old sheet . She said the specter helped keep her pelf cool during hot summer weather in her Zone 5 garden .

I plan to keep the snow peas undercover to see how long they ’ll keep growing . If I can keep harvesting pea plant during 100 - degree weather , I ’ll have it made in the shade .
