Time for this years ’ chrysanthemum photograph , as clear , I have not had the time to indite a right position contribute an unusually busy fall for me . If you lack my Martha Stewart Living cartridge feature this November , I have supply alink here to the on - line version . I felt that I should at least partake some of this years florists' chrysanthemum , since I did expend so much fourth dimension train them throughout the summertime , and because no one gets to see them if they just stay in my glasshouse all evenfall and wintertime ! ( me , included – since I am a bit overwhelmed with a kitchen remodel and other province for a bit . ) .
I plain have not been posting as frequently lately , and I apologize to you if you have been sitting patiently by your computer waitress for a station ( right ! ) . Mostly , I have been consumed with a remodeling projection at home – one which commence as a kitchen tweak , but has develop into basically a ‘ half - of - a - house ’ remodel . I demand to accept that it wo n’t be complete by Christmas and just move frontwards , but for now , I am hem in by sticking plaster junk , 100 class honest-to-goodness horsehair plaster of Paris junk , and blade fresh plaster dust .
Not to mention wire and lath hanging from he cap , holes in the level and everything that comes with a remodel . If you ’ve ever survive one in an old house , you know what I am dealing with . I could reeeeally use some decompression time in the greenhouse right now as well , but my day job as an brownie for Santa also gets a little feverish this time of year , not to mention other administration dates with a couple of plank positions , committees , industrial plant society positions and everything that issue forth with remainder - of - year campaigns . I think I really need to take some time for myself this Holiday time of year , but until then , I do owe you all a post , even if it is brief .

The chrysanthemums this season in the greenhouse at home are dramatic . They are so fragrant too , which surprised me , as I am stress a few raw varieties , as well as many old ones . Again , these are not common garden mums , but rather , indoor garden chrysanthemum – we really do n’t know what to call them , as they are a somewhat endangered type of non - commercial-grade , non - hardy chrysanthemum which a hundred year ago or so , was so popular as a fall and winter flower , but today , have evolve into what most of us know as ‘ pot - florist’s chrysanthemum ’ or ‘ hardy shock absorber mums ’ . They are neither , but rather chrysanthemums which are either trained to single stem to increase their blossom size or grow and disband to perfection .
Immensely popular and culturally meaning in Asia , as well as in Mexico where they still bet an crucial part in Day of the all in celebration , in the rest of the world , these conservatory plant of the later short - day season , have near been forget . And it ’s no curiosity , since habitation greenhouses are not common by any means , and estates with conservatories where displays could be raised and set up , are just about exitinct as well . So exposition chrysanthemum or Nipponese chrysanthemum will believably always remain a novelty – something to be viewed on rare occasions at the few botanic gardens who may bother to raise them , or in Asia ( China , Korea and Japan ) where they have more grandness .
Throughout the 18th and nineteenth hundred however , and a bit into the early twentieth century , the improbable , cultivate greenhouse or exhibition chrysanthemum was the choicest fall blooming plant . Local flower Farmer and florists grow them , since air travel limited selection , and the fact that they only organize buds and blooming in the fall and forgetful days of former winter meant that they were course design for that season . Today , one can find vintage Holiday cards with florist’s chrysanthemum on them , and images of impressive displays at museum , public garden and individual the three estates where the chrysanthemum dominate until later December .

Now , only a handful of us bother to kindle them . Maybe it ’s just out of nostalgia , or perhaps because of their oddity , or their history – which dates back hundreds of years to the 14 century ( as the chrysanthemum was the first plant to be raised as a potted works by the Chinese ) – there is just something captivating about a plant which has fascinated humanity for so long , and it seems tragical that so few today understand or appreciate their cultural DNA .
Over commercialized and hybridise into dwarft , nonmeaningful potted plant at infirmary endowment store , or a cheap , infertile slice flowers at the supermarket , – even as cautiously timed and growth retarded knoll of ma as stock nightfall decor at farm stands , the Chrysanthemum seems to have lose its link with its audience , which is a ignominy , yet perhaps just a reality of modern living ( no home nursery and conservatories , small interest or knowledge on how to raise them , and yes – only one seed on where to find them commercially in the US – Kings Mums .
If you like to heighten these as garden plant , only a very few will bloom in time before hoar , as they would require shading each evening in August to promote early bud shaping , or a cautiously selected other blooming variety . These are not on the button the same type of mum as standard fearless garden mums , not the same as rightfully stalwart perennial types – all have their merits , but they are indeed dissimilar survival of the fittest .

En masse in the greenhouse , these mommy look the best . Somehow , all of the odd colors work which may seem insufferable when one look at a catalogue where pink , magenta , lily-livered , atomic number 79 and brown are all usher side - by - side , but experiencing a video display in a glasshouse with the crushed slant of autumn sunlight , somehow it all seems ‘ right ’ . Even to a colouring flake like me .
I add some vintage Japanese lantern to the greenhouse this year ( not real Nipponese ethnical 1 , but rather mid - century interpretations of Japanese - style generic Asian theme lanterns – the sort exported to the West for party decorations in the 50 ’s , and likely for Chinese restaurants – screwball Americans ! They are still pretty , in a naive manner , but they cue me that I really do need to get some authentic Japanese lantern into a collecting ( they are just too expensive for me in good order now ! ) . So I will settle on kitsch as long as it is vintage .
As nightfall come , the lanterns are go with candles which will shed light on the greenhouse and transform it into a very special experience . lamentably , only I see it this evening , and of path , Doodles who fall in me , as she hunt for mice .

I did tot up a few Ikea lanterns as well , which were solar powered . Nothing like a footling high-pitched - tech to break the mode , but they were on sales agreement and gibe the budget .
speak of budgets – here are a few embarrassing motion picture of the kitchen remodel . Maybe I should do a post on this ? Before and after ? How we did the total projection for less than 10k ?
